Ask Dr Claire

Why has my 5 yr old dog recently become aggressive with me?

Dog to human aggression is a common, and a very serious behavioural issue.

There are many possible triggers for aggression in certain dogs and by looking closely at each situation where the act of aggression or the bite has happened you can generally work out what it is, which helps with treatment.

Being protective, territorial, in pain or fearful are just some of the possible triggers for aggression.

I would urge you to get your dog a hands-on examination from your local vet as soon as possible, as a great place to start. Ruling out sickness or injury causing aggression is essential first.

In the interim, you need to ensure your dog is confined to your place, and is unable to escape or cause anyone injury.
