6 month old cavoodle has eaten some meat that was slow cooked and there was some garlic and onion in there. I’ve read these are not good for dogs?
Onion and garlic are toxic to dogs and cats and ideally they are kept well away from them.
When eaten, onion and garlic cause damage to the red blood cells and depending on the amount that is eaten and the health of the pet, they can become very anaemic and sick.
In most cases no clinical signs are noted until there’s substantial red blood cell injury, which is generally after a lag period of several days.
It’s unlikely that meat marinaded in onion and garlic will cause a problem if given once, if actual onion and garlic was also eaten it’s best to head straight to your local vet for a hands on examination.
