ASK DR.CLAIRE
Can a puppy that has been vaccinated still get parvo?
If a puppy has been fully vaccinated according to the vaccine manufacturer’s guidelines they should be fully protected from Parvovirus. Generally there’s a good antibody response and long lasting immunity.
If a puppy was exposed to the virus prior to any vaccines or had an incomplete vaccine course, they are at risk of contacting Parvovirus when they are exposed to it.
There is also some evidence that Black and tan dogs (i.e. Dobermanns, Rottweilers) may need an extra vaccination for full protection.
