ASK DR CLAIRE

My cat hates wearing his collar he’ll either pull it off or some how chew it off. Is there anyway to get him to keep it on?

A good approach to this is to gradually build up his love (or maybe better put, tolerance!) of the collar. You could start leaving the collar on the floor on your cat’s favourite sleeping space and reward each time he touches it.

Reward him with play and petting, or food reward.

When he’s ok having it near to him, at a time that he is sleepy, you can place the collar on for a very short period of time, even just a minute, and pet and reward him again.

With time you can slowly increases the amount of time that you have it on him. Do it when you’re interacting with him, like have it on whilst he’s eating, or whilst you’re playing with hi so there’s just positive associations.

If you’d like to chat in person, you can get a vet on a live video call or start a chat to discuss in more detail now.
