I fertilised the grass and watered it in, dog now vomiting and eating grass

I fertilised the grass and watered it in, late this afternoon my 18 month old dog vomited up breakfast and a chicken wing, 8 hours later no more vomiting but she’s eating grass.
Fertiliser has the potential to be dangerous when eaten.

Obviously it depends on the amount eaten in comparison to your dog, so a small amount might be okay in a full grown Labrador, but not for example a Chihuahua. It also depends on whether it was an organic fertiliser that was old and growing mould for example, which would cause them to be more unwell, or whether there were additives in the fertiliser such as insecticides. Be sure to check the ingredients of your fertiliser.

Common symptoms of eating fertiliser is a mild to moderate tummy upset and includes:

  • Diarrhoea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Salivation,
  • Lethargy and
  • Tummy pain.

In cases of severe vomiting and diarrhoea, which are less common, they could become dehydrated or suffer an electrolyte imbalance.

A hands-on examination from your local vet ASAP is a great place to start.
