Skin care for hairless breeds

Hairless breeds need specialised skin care compared to their hairy counterparts. So when it comes to their skin, there’s a few things that need extra attention. Our Vets have put together their hairless breed skin care tips for you:
- Skin hygiene
Hairless breeds have abnormal hair follicles (where hair doesn’t erupt) which can become clogged with sebaceous material and debris. We need to avoid the clogging of the hair follicles. Weekly anti-seborrheic shampoos are usually recommended, followed with an appropriate conditioner so that the skin doesn’t dry out or get irritated. - Sun exposure
Pets with light skin and no hair cover are particularly prone to sunburn and skin cancer. Best to keep this skin out of the sun (especially at its peak 9am – 4pm) or if unavoidable to use dog appropriate sunscreen where needed. - Omega fatty acids
These are a natural anti-inflammatory for the skin and are recommended as part of a healthy, balanced diet.
When should I go to the vet?
If your dog has lumps, sore, or irritated skin, it is best to consult a vet as soon as possible. These guys are also prone to mites and ringworm, which require specific treatment. Your vet will perform some initial tests to move towards a diagnosis so that the most appropriate treatment can be started.
