Magpie Swooping Season

In Spring, Magpies are building nests in trees to raise their young and they come very protective of the surrounding area. Sometimes the male or female Magpie may swoop to protect their young from perceived threats. This usually only lasts about 6 weeks.

Please note that Magpies are a beautiful native and protected species and causing harm to them or their nests is a criminal offence punishable by law.

If you do find that you are being swooped at whilst walking or cycling, make sure that you’re protected:

1. Stay calm

2. Try to keep your eye on the Magpie

3. Back out of area if possible

4. Walk and don’t run

5. If you are on a bike, best to dismount and walk alongside it.

6. Avoid the area if possible whilst the Magpies are active.
