Diarrhoea in a Guinea Pig
Diarrhoea in a Guinea Pig is really just a symptom and can be the result of many underlying causes. In this case, we really need to find the cause of the diarrhoea so that we can treat your pig’s problem (not just the symptom). This will help us reach the best treatment plan too.
Some of the underlying causes of diarrhoea in a Guinea pig might be:
- Inadequate diet
- Fibre must be sufficient so that the gut can adequately function or else diarrhoea is likely. Encourage hay.
- Excessive fruit (may need to be removed all together)
- Incorrect veggies: dark green leafy veggies should be the bulk of what’s given
- Inadequate Vitamin C
- Infectious disease (bacteria, yeast, coccidia)
- Dental disease
Addressing the diet and a hands-on examination from your local vet would be a great place to start, they will do a dental examination and examine the faeces for infectious causes.
