Dog breathing fast, not having energy, sleeping a lot. Not being herself
A higher than normal breathing rate in a dog can be the result of many underlying causes. Some of the underlying causes of this might be:
- Heart disease
- Obesity
- Lung disease ie pneumonia
- Low blood oxygen
- Pulmonary embolism
- Fever
- Pain
- Anxiety
Lethargy is really just a symptom and can also be the result of many underlying causes. In this case, we really need to find the cause of the lethargy and increased breathing rate so that we can treat your dog’s underlying problem (not just the symptoms). This will help us reach the best treatment plan too.
A hands-on examination from your local vet as soon as possible would be a great place to start. They may even recommend a blood and urine test as a great way to assess your pup’s base health.
Chest imaging (such as radiography and ultrasound) is often used in cases of increased breathing to assess the lungs and heart.
