Ask Dr Claire

If my cat has got severe cat flu can that be passed on to my dog?

Most viruses causing cold and flu symptoms only cause a problem in one species, i.e there are different strains and viruses that affect dogs compared to cats.

So whilst it’s not impossible for flu transmission between cat and dog, it’s very, very, very, very unlikely (almost unheard of).

Also good to know that flu viruses don’t survive well in the environment so regular cleaning of bedding, litter and food and water bowls is important, as well as hand washing after handling your furry patient.
