ASK DR.CLAIRE
My 16 week old staffy puppy has gunk in the corner of both eyes. What can I do?
Gunk in the corner of eyes, where the eye is otherwise ok, is usually from conjunctivitis.
Some of the underlying causes of conjunctivitis might be:
- Infectious disease (bacteria, viruses)
- Reduced tear production (dry eye)
- Ulceration of the eye
- Foreign object in the eye (such as a grass seed)
- Allergies
Eyes are precious and a hands-on examination from your local vet would be a great place to start. In the interim, you can gently bathe the eyes with saline (you can buy this or make this with 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in 1 cup of boiling water, then COOLED before use).
If you’d like to chat in person, you can get a vet on a live video call or start a chat to discuss in more detail now.
