Ask Dr Claire

My cat has a sore, red eye, what can I do?

A sore, red eye is really just a symptom and can be the result of many underlying causes. Some of the underlying causes of red eyes might be:

  • Infection (viral, bacterial conjunctivitis)
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (food, pollens)
  • Dry eye
  • Ulceration of the eye
  • Foreign object in the eye (i.e. grass seed)

In this case, we really need to find the cause of the sore eye so that we can treat your cat’s problem (not just the symptom). This will help us reach the best treatment plan too.

A hands-on examination from your local vet as soon as possible would be a great place to start.
