Ask Dr Claire

My cat has lost a lot of weight. Is she ok?

Changes in weight are a good indicator that something is not right.

Some cats do lose some weight if they are more active in the warmer months compared to winter months, but in general weight loss (especially a noticeable amount) usually indicates that something is going on.

It is a very nonspecific sign, that doesn’t indicate a specific disease or illness, and could be due to many.

A hands-on examination from your local vet would be a great place to start. They may even recommend a blood test (including the thyroid hormone) as a great way to assess your cat’s health.

Abdominal imaging (such as radiography and ultrasound) is often used to further investigate the cause in many weight loss cases.
