Ask Dr Claire

My dog started taking Sulfasalazine today. He can’t swallow them unless I cut them in two. Will this upset his tummy as they are extended release?

Sulfasalazine delayed-release tablets are best given whole and not broken in half.

You could try coating it in some food and then placing at the back of your dogs throat (at the very back of the tongue), and holding their mouth gently until they swallow.

Be sure to follow immediately with an appropriate reward so it’s a positive experience.

Most dogs can usually tolerate large tablets well when you find the best way to give it to them.

You could visit your clinic tomorrow, and ask the vet or an experienced nurse to administer the tablet first thing and show you how it’s done.

If you’d like to chat in person, you can get a vet on a live video call or start a chat to discuss in more detail now.
