ASK DR.CLAIRE

My Koolie is excessively shedding her fur in clumps, is it something to be concerned about

It can be quite normal for dogs to be shedding excessively and even in clumps, especially in Summer, provided they continue to maintain a normal hair coat.

Other conditions that can increase hair turnover (more shedding) include:

  • Poor diet
  • Inflammation due to allergies (make sure you use a good flea control regularly)
  • Skin infections
  • Metabolic diseases

Certainly daily brushing and weekly washing in an oatmeal shampoo for dogs will help reduce the shedded hair found around the place, and of course ensuring your dog is on a premium and balanced food (typically not from the supermarket).

However, it’s important to look at the overall health of your dog first.
