Ask Dr Claire

Our puppy was desexed today but seems overly lethargic. Is this normal?

Desexing is a big procedure in puppies and depending on what procedure was done (ie boy or girl), whether there were any complications, and how the pup handled the anaesthetic will determine how they recover from the procedure.

So recovery will vary hugely from patient to patient.

It’s very normal for puppies to be tired and sleepy afterwards. They should be able to stand and walk, drink water, and may have had a small amount to eat (although many don’t until the next day).

If you’re concerned you really need to get veterinary advice. I really can’t confirm whether your pups lethargy is normal or a concern over a email question without seeing the patient.

If you can’t reach your operating vet or you’d like to chat in person, you can get a vet on a live video call or start a chat to discuss in more detail now.
